Prompt 15

Displays are a great way to market library’s fiction collection. After reading chapter six titled Promoting and Marketing Readers Advisory Collection and Services, I found some useful tips on how to best situate a display to drawl in patron’s attention. One of the tips that I found interesting, was to not choose mass-marketed paperbacks because they were picked less frequently by patrons and instead use large trade paperback. Also include books in the display that have an eye-catching cover to entice patrons. Another great fact is to make a display that patrons can immediately look through and check out, having a display behind lock won’t garner a lot of interest for patrons. The library I currently work for usually have seasonal and holiday displays located in the front of the library. I think it would be interesting to also see book displays in some of the larger areas of the library where they aren’t located on shelves on the wall.
Another way to promote library’s fiction collection is to make bookmarks. It is more work for the creator, but it gives the reader a succinct amount of information about a list of books to choose from. Doing this will help highlight parts of the fiction collection and give patrons a list of potential reads. The bookmark will only focus on a limited subject area that will be sentence long, which will let the reader know quickly what the book is about. Proofreading will be used on every title before being added to the list. (Promote)
Creating a program around a certain genre in the fiction collections would be a fun way to market the library’s fiction collection. Maybe creating a program that focused on the mystery genre collection and was made for the Halloween or fall season would be a lot of fun for the patrons. With true crime being a popular subject, having a murder mystery program that includes authors and books with that same theme would give mystery fans a chance to learn more about different books and authors in that genre.

  1. Masada,
I totally agree with you on displays. It's really one of the best ways to market the fiction section. However, I really like you idea about the bookmarks! I hadn't even thought about that. They are more work for the creator, but they are a small, great way to get the information out there!

  2. I like your idea for programming around genres! My library has trouble sometimes getting adults to show up for programming, but I think libraries that have a strong programming base could do a lot with genre-based programming. Do you have any other ideas for other genres?

  3. I always enjoy when libraries create the bookmark lists. It sure is more work, but it's worth it if they're getting used. In high school I interned at a middle school's library and spent a lot of time making bookmarks like this for the kids - they LOVED them. It gave them a way to mark their place in the book they'd just checked out, and it listed other books that they could find the next time they came in without having to ask me or the librarian - we were both usually crazy busy when classes came in, and there was limited time for serious RA interactions. It was a happy medium. And, I will say that though they were a lot of work, they were useful beyond their first printing and could easily be updated when new books were released that fit the theme/genre, making them less work over time.
